LONG ITINERARY
Day 1: Pickup from Chandigarh. Drive to Sissu.
Early morning pickup & drive towards Sissu. We will follow Beas river via Kullu, Manali and Solang Valley. Our stay is at Khangsar which is roughly two hours from Manali.
Day 2: Sissu to Purne via Shinku La.
The drive from Sissu to Purne via Shinku La is one of the most spectacular high-altitude roads in the Indian Himalayas. The journey begins in the lush Lahaul Valley. The road follows the Bhaga River through villages such as Keylong and Jispa before reaching Darcha. This section is well paved and relatively easy, with broad valleys, green fields, and snow-covered peaks. Beyond Darcha, the scenery changes dramatically. The road climbs steadily through barren mountains with numerous switchbacks. Near the summit, snowbanks may remain well into summer. The pass itself offers sweeping views of glaciers and surrounding Himalayan peaks. Weather can change rapidly, with strong winds and sudden snowfall even during the riding season.
The descent into Zanskar is among the most scenic parts of the route. The mountains become more rugged, and you’ll pass alpine meadows, turquoise streams, dramatic rock formations, the iconic peak of Gonbo Rangjon, a striking isolated mountain revered by locals.
Road conditions here are generally good but can include rough patches, stream crossings, and temporary diversions depending on ongoing work.
The road follows the Kurgiakh and Tsarap river valleys through remote settlements before reaching Purne. This section has spectacular canyon scenery with sheer cliffs and fast-flowing rivers.
Purne itself is a small village that serves as the trailhead for Phugtal Monastery, one of the most remarkable monasteries in the Himalayas, reached by a 2–3 hour hike.
Day 3:Purne to Padum.
The road between Purne and Padum is a breathtaking mountain route that winds through the rugged Zanskar Valley. Following the turquoise Zanskar River for much of the journey, it passes dramatic cliffs, barren landscapes, and small traditional villages surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. Though the road is narrow, winding, and rough in places, it offers spectacular views of deep gorges, river crossings, and untouched high-altitude scenery, making it one of the most scenic and adventurous drives in Ladakh.
Day 4 : Visit Karsha Gompha, Dzonkhul Monastery, Zangla Palace, Stongdey Gompa, Drang Drung Glacier, Pensi La
Today is our excursion day. We’ll explore the cultural and natural treasures of the Zanskar Valley. Begin with Karsha Gompa, the region’s largest and most important monastery, perched dramatically on a hillside overlooking the valley. Continue to Dzonkhul Monastery, a serene cave monastery associated with the revered yogi Naropa and known for its sacred springs. Visit the historic Zangla Palace, a centuries-old royal residence offering sweeping views and a glimpse into Zanskar’s royal heritage. Next, discover Stongdey Gompa, one of the valley’s oldest monasteries, renowned for its vibrant murals and peaceful hilltop setting. The journey then leads to the spectacular Drang Drung Glacier, one of Ladakh’s largest glaciers, where vast ice fields cascade through the mountains. Conclude at Pensi La, a high-altitude mountain pass that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the glacier, pristine alpine lakes, and the dramatic Himalayan landscape.
Day 5 : Padum to Gombo Rongjon.
En route, visit Bardan Monastery, a beautifully perched monastery overlooking the Lungnak River, known for its peaceful atmosphere and rich Buddhist heritage. Continue to the refreshing Shila Waterfall, a picturesque cascade surrounded by dramatic cliffs, offering a perfect stop amidst nature. The route then leads to the tranquil Mune Gompa, a lesser-known monastery that provides a glimpse into the spiritual life of the region. As the journey unfolds, the majestic silhouette of Gombo Rangjon, a sacred monolithic mountain revered by Buddhists, gradually dominates the horizon, culminating in one of Zanskar’s most awe-inspiring and spiritually significant landscapes.
Day 6 : Gombo Rongjon to Manali via Shinku La.
We’ll complete the track-back to Manali crossing Shinku La from the opposite side. The change of scenery will be a mirror of what we got while entering Zanskar, from barren to green.
Day 7: Manali To Chandigarh. See off
The drive from Manali to Chandigarh is a scenic journey that descends from the majestic Himalayas into the fertile plains of northern India. Following the Beas River through picturesque valleys, the route passes charming hill towns, terraced fields, apple orchards, and dense pine forests before gradually opening into the rolling countryside of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. As the winding mountain roads give way to smooth highways, the landscape transforms from cool alpine scenery to bustling towns and vibrant agricultural fields, culminating in the well-planned city of Chandigarh. This route offers a perfect blend of mountain vistas, riverside beauty, and a comfortable drive back to urban life.
